Discover Which Fruit and Vegetables Help Relieve Arthritic Pain

30 May

If you or someone you know suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, you
know how painful and debilitating it can be. If you haven’t
walked a mile in those shoes, you can’t imagine how frustrating
it can be. Your doctor may say try this medication, try that.
Don’t do this, do that. But sometimes, to no avail. The disease
is caused by a misguided immune system attack on the body’s own
joint tissue, which leads to swelling, pain, stiffness and in
some cases deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis is more common among
women than men.

Perhaps what you’re eating, or more specifically what you’re not
eating can be causing some of your soreness. Recent findings
suggest that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, legumes and
certain oils aids in relieving symptoms in people with rheumatoid
arthritis. After following a diet rich in fruits and veggies for
three months, people with rheumatoid arthritis experienced a
number of improvements not seen in people following a typical
American diet high in processed foods. Some of the improvements
shown include a decrease in pain, inflammation, disease activity
and in the number of swollen joints. Further, previous research
suggested that more olive oil and cooked vegetables help protect
people from the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

The current results suggest that “patients with (rheumatoid
arthritis) can obtain better physical function and increase their
vitality” from eating a fruit, vegetables, legumes and some oils
diet for three months, write Dr. Lars Skoldstam of Visby Hospital
in Sweden and colleagues.

This plan is similar to that of people who live in the
Mediterranean. They also tend to eat a lot of fruit, vegetables,
and legumes, more fish and less red meat. Moreover, they drink a
moderate amount of wine, and rely on olive oil as their main
source of dietary fat. Earlier research has suggested that
followers of this diet enjoy a wide range of benefits, such as a
lower risk of heart disease, cancer and memory loss.

Additional studies have shown that citrus and zinc may also cut
rheumatoid arthritis risk. Citrus can be helpful because of the
antioxidants they contain. Findings are not conclusive, yet
promising.

In the study, the doctors found that women getting less than 40
micrograms of beta-cryptoxanthin, a component found in citrus
fruits such as oranges and grapefruit were at a somewhat elevated
danger of developing rheumatoid arthritis than women who consumed
more than that amount.

Although thus far it has only been proven that genetics is the
culprit behind rheumatoid arthritis, if there have been some
findings as to the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables,
wouldn’t it make sense for suffers to up their intake? It
certainly can’t hurt… and may actually help. Now please pass the
broccoli with a side of grapefruit!

An Introduction to Canine Lymphosarcoma

30 May

Canine lymphosarcoma is a deadly cancer in dogs. The disease can occur in various parts of the body, but commonly affects the lymph nodes. It can also invade the liver, spleen, and other organs.

Symptoms
Dogs display different symptoms based on where the tumor is located. If the disease only affects the lymph nodes, then they will simply swell up. The dog will likely show no other symptoms. If the lymphosarcoma occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, your dog will experience vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. He will probably lose weight also.
Canine lymphosarcoma can also affect the skin. This will cause lumps to form that may be red and itchy. If the disease affects your dog’s chest cavity, he may start having trouble breathing.

Diagnosis
Your dog will have to undergo a battery of tests if the veterinarian suspects this disease. The bone marrow may have to be analyzed to ensure that cancerous cells haven’t invaded. The veterinarian may also perform blood tests, an ultrasound, and an x-ray.

Treatment
Canine lymphosarcoma can affect many parts of the body at the same time. Therefore, radiation therapy and surgery are not effective treatment methods. The best method of treatment for this disease is chemotherapy. The chemotherapy medication is given orally and via injection once a week.

Prognosis
With successful treatment, your dog may survive for months or even years. If the condition is left untreated, then your dog probably won’t survive for two months. Since the disease is almost always fatal, you will have to make the decision on whether or not to treat your dog.

Water Filters – Affordable for Families

29 May

Health conscience people are on the loose and water has become an important factor in our health. Now families on a budget can get a water filter of some sort so they can enjoy healthy water.

I have reviewed many brands of filters and have found the basic general information from about all of them.

The faucet mount system runs about $25 and comes with 1 original filter.

Replacement filters are about $15 each and you can buy them in a multiple pack which means you will always have one ready when your filter is done and they are cheaper by buying more than one at a time. Water is filtered through the oval cylinder which houses the filter and comes out a small pea size hole. This does reduce the pressure of the water which in turn will take longer for a glass to fill.

The second faucet mount is one with a side button which turns instead of the whole unit and water is dispensed from the faucet rather than the small hole within the filter. Water comes out quicker from a larger hole. This unit is a little more expensive at $39.99 but you do not have to worry about flipping the unit up and down. The replacement filters are the same at about $15 each and cheaper if you buy in a quantity pack.

The under sink filter is actually quite easy to install. You just need to make a little extra space under the sink cabinet but still will have room for some storage items. This unit costs about $89 and the filter replacements are $35. This filters about 200 gallons which will give quality water for about 4-6 months.

The pitcher is the most reasonably priced at $9.99 for the 1 gallon. You can buy different versions of the filter which can cost more. These other pitchers have a few more bells and whistles on them such as a digital readout, more capacity and one even has a flavor addition to the filter which is pretty cool. These other versions can vary in price from $22 to $29 for the fancy models. The replacement filters for the pitchers are about $9.99.

I tested all of them and like the undersink version the best as I don’t have to fill a pitcher all the time or not have filtered water when it was empty. The faucet mount can be cumbersome at the sink.

There are many choices for a family to have a water filter.

The Hillary Clinton Stock Market and Economy – Three Areas to Consider

26 May

I would like to remind the reader of the last time in our country’s history when taxes, unemployment, and inflation were extraordinarily high: the late 1970′s during the Carter presidency. Inflation was raging and interest rates were in double digits. Many consumers in our economy today do not have vivid memories of that time.

Yet after the 1970′s inflationary spiral was broken, at the expense of a severe recession with extremely high unemployment – we have since enjoyed over twenty years of a fundamentally good stock market and economy.

But what if today’s relatively good stock market and jobs creating economy were to change? I must admit, I am of the opinion that the winds of inflation may be building a momentum again after all these years of disinflation. I agree with Alan Greenspan’s opinion in a CNBC interview that we no longer have the luxury of implementing easy monetary policy, as we did after the technology and stock price bubble deflated after 2000, when deflation was actually a threat.

We have an important election in 2008 that may determine the course of the stock market and the economy in a manner not seen since the late 1970′s. Hillary Clinton is the current favorite to win the Democratic nomination – and she is running a liberal, progressive campaign. The Democratic nominee, whoever he or she may be, may win the White House.

There are three areas to consider with respect to why the stock market could decline into a bear market should the economically liberal platform be enacted.

The first proposal of the Clinton campaign that would be anathema to the stock market is the planned redistribution of wealth. Giuliani, in a CNBC interview, actually called this plan an entitlement program for the middle class. This would be in the form of a tax-the-rich-and-give-the-funds-to-the-middle-class policy. This sounds good in theory, but this action would not create a penny of additional wealth or a single new job in our country. The policy simply takes away from one group to give to another more favored group of people. Such a policy could even lower the amount of wealth in our country, as those businesses that are creating jobs might make less money – especially small businesses that may have to lay off workers because their taxes are higher. The economy, and consequently the stock market, could suffer.

To give an example in industry of a possible redistribution policy, an obvious target of the Clinton campaign has been the almost universally hated oil and gas industry, which the Senator believes makes too much money. In fact, I saw an excerpt of a Clinton speech on TV that the senator wanted to “take that money” and I suppose give it to a more favored group of people or industry. This action would amount to an expropriation of assets and would reduce employment in the oil industry. The stock market could react badly to that.

I would like to point out that there have been times in the history of the oil and gas industry during which these companies have been in a depression – but they were not bailed out. But even such a hated industry as the oil and gas industry is capable of creative movement. Fortune magazine reports that Royal Dutch Petroleum has been investing heavily for years in scientific research to produce oil from shale in America. Fortune reports that there is a potential production of 300,000 barrels a day – and it would be profitable at $30 per barrel. They further report that Royal Dutch’s technology is supposed to be way ahead of their competitors, with the company holding some 200 patents.

Royal Dutch seems to think those years of heavy investment in research and development will pay off in the near-term horizon. They would also plan to build the first new refinery in the U.S. in decades. Heavy taxes on this industry could discourage new investments such as the Royal Dutch project. The end result would be more energy dependence.

The second idea of the Clinton campaign that would hurt the stock market and the economy is the re-regulation and regulation for the first time of major industries in our economy. If an unfettered industry is seen as making too much money, then it might be a target for being regulated, which inherently makes the industry less creative, vibrant, profitable and flexible (with concurrent less ability to withstand economic shocks and adapt to changing economic conditions).

Alan Greenspan, in a speech reported on CNBC, attributed the flexibility of our economy as one reason why we have not had such deep recessions in recent years. While one sector of the economy is under water, other sectors can pick up the slack and prevent a recession from becoming damaging. But, if employees are tied by regulation to industries that are no longer competitive, then the overall economy would be hurt – those workers would not be retrained for the emerging new industries of the future. The economy would be more rigid by definition and we might experience a declining standard of living as older regulated industries would not make it in the global economy and become obsolete. Like it or not, our capitalist economy works best as a self-correcting mechanism, with new industries supplanting the old.

An industry which could suffer a decline in employment and innovation because of regulation is also a target for criticism: the drug and medical devices companies. We all remember Senator Clinton’s early 1990′s health care plan, crafted behind the scenes, which really would have been “government run healthcare.” The Senator never apologized for that failed attempt at healthcare nationalization, but even now blames her former opposition. The healthcare sector in the stock market at that time fell out of bed while the Clinton plan was being propagated. If nationalized medicine were to become a threat again, that poor action in the stock market could be repeated. So far, the Senator’s “American Health Choices Plan,” as smoothly explained on the Clinton campaign website, seems on the surface pretty innocuous. But it also would be extremely expensive, perhaps tempting Clinton (if she were elected) to revive her previous ill-considered plan.

I believe that there must be a way to insure the uninsured for hospital stays, doctor visits, pharmaceuticals, etc. without uprooting the entire system. I think one question that is not being discussed is whether a Clinton administration would propose to control drug prices. We have had experience with price controls under President Nixon, and it just produced shortages of goods. There could be shortages of essential medicines if price controls on drugs make it less profitable to invest in the research it takes to develop and produce them. A less profitable atmosphere for the drug industry means fewer drug companies and fewer drugs being invented. Why should entrepreneurs launch new drug companies pioneering new science when their prices are to be controlled and profits regulated?

The fact is that the pharmaceutical industry is not the problem – they are the solution. A pharmaceutical company might spend one billion dollars and two decades developing an important drug that can save lives and keep people from costly stays in the hospital. If artificial controls are placed on the drug’s price, then it actually may not be profitable for the company to develop new drugs in the future. They could fire researchers and other employees to cut costs. Since over 90% of all new pharmaceuticals are developed in the US, health care costs would likely go up as new cost saving cures would not be developed.

Drug companies have invented life saving medicines that have kept tens of millions of people out of costly hospital stays, and saved and extended many lives. I believe these drugs are an extremely cost-effective solution to illness and disease – and I do believe all private insurance should cover prescription drugs liberally.

The third area of a possible Clinton presidency about which one must be concerned if you are a stock market investor or simply a taxpayer, is free trade. An open trade system has allowed our country to prosper in the last two decades. Granted, currency manipulation on the part of a trading partner (such as China) is not free trade – but most of our trading partners and the newly emerging eastern European economies are adopting lower taxes and free market policies. It is a shame that the liberal wing of the Democratic Party has not received that message and is indicating a path for this country that may bring our economy and our stock market back to the past economic policies of the 1970′s.

The outcome of the 2008 presidential election will do much to determine the outlook for the economy and the stock market in the next several years. Regardless of who wins, the second year of the presidential term is usually poor for the stock market, as the policy makers make the economy take its medicine early on in the term.

The Federal Reserve, in its current easing mode, should encourage the stock market until the months before the election, when it will be clearer who the victor will be. At that time, the stock market’s future direction will be determined by the degree of wisdom of the victor’s economic policies, and, of course, Federal Reserve policy.

I was first exposed to financial markets when I started reading the stock quotes out of the newspaper to my businessman grandfather, who was legally blind, when I was about ten. I remember Papa always told me: “Buy Triple A” (the best stocks). Later, I studied economics at both Vassar College and Columbia University, where I became intrigued by the link between psychology and economic theory. My current e-book, A Way to Wealth – the Art of Investing in Common Stocks, is available at my website, http://www.ReiznersWay.com.

Hip Replacement Exercises – Pre & Post Surgery Hip Exercises

25 May

A diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the hip generally progresses to the likelihood of requiring a hip replacement in the near future. As the degenerative condition advances, it causes a decreased range of motion, pain, muscle weakness, gait changes, and tight muscles. Specific exercises designed for hip arthritis can help maintain range of motion at your joint, prevent loss of muscle, stretch muscles that will become tight, and lubricate the joint to decrease stiffness and pain. In addition, performing exercises prior to surgery will speed up your recovery post operation.

Goals of a Hip Arthritis Exercise Program – Pre Operation:

There are two main goals to target with a pre operation hip arthritis exercise program. One is strength of the gluteal muscles and the other is to maintain range of motion by working within your pain free range. There are exercises that work both of these goals simultaneously. The gluteal muscles are extremely important to strengthen pre operation because they comprise the stability of the joint. Ironically, arthritis causes pain, decreased range of motion, and therefore less weight bearing which all contribute to atrophy, or shrinking, of the gluteal muscles. Therefore, it is paramount to actively engage in specific strength exercises that target these muscles. Although strength and range of motion are highlighted as the priorities here, cardiovascular or aerobic conditioning is also extremely important. Usually due to pain and decreased range of motion, both walking and overall activity are reduced drastically which negatively lowers an individual’s aerobic capacity. Using stationary bikes or participating in water classes are excellent non weight bearing options to keep your cardiovascular conditioning strong.

Hip Exercises Post Surgery

There are a series of exercises your physiotherapist will guide you through immediately post operation. They will guide you through an exercise program that will be safe with the goal of returning you to full function in daily activities. This program will last up to 6 to 8 weeks post operation. A lot of patients stop the exercises once they are discharged or released from the supervision of their physiotherapy. It is imperative that you continue hip strengthening exercises in a progressive format for at least one year post operation. Patients that have continued with an exercise program consistently for a full year post operation, receive amazing results in functional ability.

Goals of Hip Arthritis Exercise Program – Post Operation:

Follow the exercise program guidelines given to you by your physiotherapist for the first 6 to 8 weeks post operation. The post operation exercise program varies from the pre operation program on three aspects which include the following: range of motion stretches have to be modified to follow restrictions that protect your joint from dislocation, strength exercises will progress to weight bearing, and one leg balance exercises along with gait retraining become a priority. Post surgery, the goal of your exercise program should be to progressively advance your strength exercises, when your body is ready, from isolated muscular endurance exercises to dynamic, functional exercises. Again, the most important muscles to strengthen post operation are your gluteals. Your exercise program should also include quadricep strengthening and core stability exercises. When you are selecting exercises, it is highly advised to select unilateral or one limb exercises in order to make the strength equal across limbs.

The journey your muscles have endured from the pre surgery pain through the operation leaves them tight and contracted in a shortened position. Therefore, stretching is equally important to include in your post operation exercise program. Often the hip flexors, hamstrings, and quadriceps will be tight post operation and need to be stretched. The very exciting aspect of the post operation exercise program is that you are pain free and therefore can gradually increase your cardiovascular training time and intensity to your pre arthritic conditioned level.

When you are disciplined at consistently keeping up with your exercises and gradually progress through incremental stages of exercises, you will notice huge improvements in your cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, balance, gait, and overall functional ability. The importance of engaging in a regular, consistent exercise program both pre and post hip operation will impact your full recovery greatly. A hip exercise program is the best single action you can take to encourage a highly successful return to function post surgery.

Swine Flu – Cry Wolf, Cover-up, Diversion, Hoax?

24 May

Is the swine flu another case of health officials ‘crying wolf,’ a test of their emergency system in preparation for something else, a cover-up or even a hoax? According to the World Health Organization, “Influenza is a highly infectious disease caused by a very unstable virus…annual epidemics are thought to result in 3-5 million cases of severe illness and from 250,000 to 500,000 deaths…The greatest public health concern lies in the tendency of Influenzavirus A to change suddenly and markedly, either through mutation or through the exchange of influenza virus genes or through the transfer of whole virus between host species into novel, genetically distinct subtypes…The result is the sudden appearance of a new virus strain to which populations may have no immunity and against which no existing vaccine may confer protection” (WHO 11/26/02, 111th Session, item 5.8).

The WHO notes that the 1918 pandemic killed some 40-50 million people and that a “likely” new pandemic would kill around a half-million people in industrial nations alone. Now, let’s take a look at the following numbers regarding the current swine flu, H1N1. Keep in mind, that by the time you read this, the numbers will surely have changed.

– THE UNITED STATES: The number of confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States rose to 111 spread across 13 states, health officials said (THE NUMBER OF STATES IS NOW 22).
– CONFIRMED INFECTIONS: Thirteen countries have been affected in addition to Mexico. According to the World Health Organization: The United States 91, Mexico 26, Canada 13, Germany 3, Britain 5, Israel 2, New Zealand 3, Spain 4, Austria 1.
The following countries have also announced confirmed cases: Costa Rica 2, Netherlands 1, Peru 1, and Switzerland 1.
- NATIONS WITH SUSPECTED INFECTIONS: Argentina 3, Australia 114, Chile 24, Colombia 59, Denmark 5, Finland 1, France 41, Ireland 3, Italy 20, Japan 1, Poland 2, Portugal 1, South Africa 1, South Korea 4, Sweden 5. (c) 2009 AFP

Everyone knows that WHO alert level has been raised to a level 5, 6 being the highest. But in looking at the history and the numbers, is this justified? We are looking at only a few hundred cases on a worldwide basis. In the United States alone, the annual seasonal flu kills 36,000 according to the CDC. Why all the fuss over the politically incorrect ‘swine flu?’ Is it possible that the high alert is just a test of our emergency systems? If so, why now and why over a flu? Is it possible that we are not being told the entire story and if not, what is really going on? Is it possible that Vice president Joe Biden actually meant what he said but that he was not supposed to let the ‘pig out of the bag?’ What does he possibly know that we do not? Or, as some have suggested who are really into conspiracy theories, is this just a ploy to get more money for the pharmaceutical industry or a way of diverting attention away from issues like the economy and climate change?

The numbers do not match the response. Either we are being kept in the dark about what is really going on, or someone is playing a very expensive and dangerous game. I am not a big fan of wasting taxpayers’ money on often wasteful and usually fruitless Congressional investigations. But in this instance, someone needs to look into this and let the public know the truth about what is really going on. Cry wolf, a cover-up, a test, a diversion? You be the judge, but it is time to ask the questions.

Arthritis & Rheumatism

24 May

There is a difference between arthritis and rheumatism. Inflammatory pain from joint(s) is arthritis; and from tissues around the joints such as tendon, liagament, muscle or bone is rheumatism. These conditions have long been considered to be chronic, degenerative and incurable. Standard medical treatment consists of aspirin, corticosteroidsand other non-steroidal anti-flammatory drugs which alleviate pain. Unfortunately, long term use of these drugs cause side effects like risk of liver and kidney damage, and they exacerbate cartilage breakdown and inhibit the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

There are now several natural substances that may just change all these. While these natural substance sometimes takes lone to show results, but in the long run, they may be just as effective as conventional treatments without the side effects.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin : Both glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate belong to a class of compounds called glycosaminoglycans. Glucosamine furnishes the basic building block of mucopolysaccharides which is the integral components of synovial fluid that form the framework of bones, cartilage, nails, hair and skin. Increased amounts of glucosamine stimulates the activity of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These cells then build the framework of bone cartilage with mucopolysaccharides.

Chondroitin sulfate acts as bait, attracting fluid into the weblike cartilage that covers the bones of the joint. The fluid attracted into the cartilage provides shock absorption for surrounding bones and supplies nutrients to the cartilage, thus supporting its regeneration and growth. Joint cartilage does not possess a blood supply, so its nutritional needs must be met by the fluid surrounding the joint.

Supplemental sources of glucosamine is available in 3 forms : sulfate, hydrochloride and n-acetyl, but glucosamine sulfate has been studied the most. Chondroitin is available in animal tissues such as gristles around joints. Chondroitin works synergistically with glucosamine to prevent premature breakdown of cartilage and stimulate production of new cartilage.

MSM (mehylsulfonylmethane) : This has become popular as a pain reliever for those suffering from arthritis.

MSM is a highly bioavailable source of sulfur, which is one of the prevalent minerals in the body’s physical structure, including protein, collagen, glucosamine, hair, skin and nails. MSM is also the basis of many essential biochemicals and important enzymatic functions. MSM helps to ease inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. Sulfur makes cells more permeable which allows fluid and nutrients to flow more freely through the cell wall, removing toxins in the cell, reducing pain and inflammation and promoting tissue healing.

Besides relief of joint and muscle pain, allegy, parasitic and other inflammatory conditions also respond well to the addition of MSM.

CM (cetyl myristoleate) : It has 3 function capacities. It lubricates joints and muscles, making them soft and pliable. It also acts as an immune system modulator. This may be the reason it has been found to be effective in managing autoimmune diseases such as rheumatiod arthritis, systemic lupus and multiple sclerosis. It mediates inflammatory processes.

Bromelain : This enzyme is a mainstay for treating muscle injuries, but its anti-inflammatory actions also ease arthritic pain. Bromelain breaks down scar tissue, reduces water retention and blocks inflammation.

Bamboosil : This is well known for its high content in silica which helps support and remineralises the bones.

Antioxidants : These are nutrients that stabilise free radials. Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that attack tissues, including joint tissues. Antioxidants prevent free-radical induced tissue damage and resulting inflammation.

Antioxiadnts include OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins), vitamins A, C, E, Zinc, Selemium, etc.

Essential Fatty Acids : The joint inflammation is regulated in large part by essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. While omega-3 fatty acids prevent the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), omega-6 fatty acids help produce the beneficial prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). A balance intake of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is necessary.

While many of the supplements mentioned above are beneficial in easing the pain and inflammation often associated with arthritis or rheumatism, their most important role lies in preventing these conditions. Neither arthritis nor rheumatism is inevitable. Daily supplementation of essential nutrients, as well as regular exercise and a healthy diet are integral to overall bone, joint and ligaments health.

Clean Door Knobs Prevent Swine Flu

22 May

You have no doubt heard about the swine flu that is going around. It is a new flu that is putting people in the hospital and in many cases claiming lives. So, what can you do to prevent you and your family from getting sick? Well in addition to all the health precautions you have probably seen on the news you may also want to consider taking a little more time out to clean the door knobs in your home.

You don’t know what germs are on the hands of you and your family when you come in and out of the house. Think of all the things you touch when you are out in public. You are touching door knobs and handles that thousands of people have touched. If one of them had swine flu you could have picked up the germs and are carrying them around on your hands, just waiting until they can find a way into your body.

Sure, cleaning your hands is one way to try and make sure you don’t get infected, but you also have to think about the other members of your family and how good they are at always washing their hands when they should. Kids are especially bad at this. They have so many other things on their minds they just don’t think or care about the safety aspects of washing their hands regularly. Instead they continue to play with their friends who may be coughing and sneezing and bring those germs home. And if those coughing and sneezing kids visit your house, they are likely putting the germs on your knobs themselves.

So, in addition to making sure you make your children wash their hands every time you turn around, you should also make sure you are regularly cleaning your door knobs as door knobs are a common transfer location for swine flu germs.

Hot Soapy Water- You should use warm or hot soapy water to clean the door knobs initially. This will help get dirt and grime off of the knobs and will also hopefully remove any of the germs that may have gotten onto the door knobs from those little infected hands.

Disinfectant – Next you should go through the household cleaners you already have in your home and look for ones that can help you take this cleaning to the next level. Something that is anti bacterial will help to make sure those germs are not transferring anywhere. But before you use just any cleaner, make sure to read up on it. Some cleaners are not meant for certain types of materials. Make sure you are using something that is safe for your door knob and the door surface.

Swine flu is a big threat these days and none of us are immune to it. But you can protect your family a little more by taking a few steps to try and remove the threat of infection from your home. Regularly cleaning the door knobs is one of the vital things on this list.

Exercise Tips For Older Dogs and Dogs With Arthritis

22 May

If your dog has arthritis, chances are your veterinarian has recommended that your dog get regular exercise.

Why is exercise recommended for dogs with arthritis?

Though it might seem counterintuitive to have your dog move more when moving causes him pain, movement produces lubricating fluids in the joints that will make movement easier for him in the long run.

What types of exercise are good for dogs with arthritis?

Light exercise is best for dogs with arthritis. And what, you might ask, does “light exercise” mean? Anything that is gentle on the joints, like walking and swimming.

Swimming, in particular, is an excellent choice for dogs with arthritis as has the least amount of impact on their joints. If you dog wasn’t a swimmer previously, make sure to purchase a dog life jacket for her, as it will keep her safe as she grows accustomed to the water. And even if your dog grew up swimming, a dog life jacket is still a good idea as it will help support her weight in the water – making it even easier for her to get some exercise without causing additional strain on her joints.

How often should your arthritic dog exercise?

Your dog’s exercise routine should be regular amounts of light exercise. It doesn’t have to be much, a walk around the block will do! But the key is consistency. Only regular amounts of light exercise will help lubricate her joints and alleviate her pain. A good schedule might be: a walk around the block each night with two sessions of swimming per week. Or maybe alternative between swimming one day and walking the next. What ever works best for you and your dog!

But in the end, when caring for your arthritic dog, remember two things:
Movement is the lubricant and Consistency is key!

Allergy Skin Rash and Foods – Children Rash Symptoms

19 May

The recent study by the Center for Disease Control highlights that there is an eighteen percent increase in food allergies for kids. Symptoms can be stomach upsets, allergy skin rash, breathing problems and headaches.

Some say that people are more conscious of what a food allergy is today and in the past it may have been that people thought their kids had colds or respiratory issues instead of allergic reactions. Nonetheless, three million kids in the US are said to have food allergies. In other studies, the biggest offenders are dairy , peanut-based products and eggs. Peanut allergies can also cause severe reaction called anaphylaxis. When this happens the person will have their airways swell, lowered blood pressure and a severe reaction.

Children rash symptoms to foods can take the form of eczema, hives and redness around the mouth area. Kids can be very self-conscious about having a skin rash so help them to feel comfortable by using anti=itch creams and ointments to help the inflammation. Skin prick tests as well as patch tests by an allergist can help narrow down the allergic reactions. An allergist may also have you do blood work to check out the IGM and IGE which are immunoglobulin antibodies.

In addition to the above foods, be aware of food dyes and if they are possible causes for your child’s skin rash. Find out what he or she may be eating at school as kids pass candies around and often peanuts are hidden in protein bars and other common snack foods. If your child has an allergy skin rash to foods, urge him to not scratch it and use anti-itch creams as impetigo or other infections are common complications of children rash problems which make the healing as well as diagnose more difficult.
