Kitchen water filtering systems range from under the sink to refrigerator filters dispensing water and ice from the door. There are countertop steam distilling units, and pitcher units with replaceable cartridges. They all have their benefits and drawbacks.
Under the sink models connect to the cold water line and filter the water before it gets to the faucet. They use activated carbon, much like the faucet mounted filter systems. Those connect to the faucet itself, and have an on demand feature to direct the water to the filter when you want it to be. It is best not to run hot water through these filters. With a pitcher unit, you fill it from the tap, and it is gravity fed through a carbon filter. These all require replacement of cartridges periodically, as does the refrigerator filter.
For countertop models of a home steam distiller, they use your tap water like the pitcher unit. The water is brought to a boil, and there are special vents to release inert gases and impurities that have a lower boiling point than the water. The water boils and becomes steam, which is collected and recondensed to liquid. The results are distilled, clean water, with the deposits and solids remaining in the vessel used to boil the water, to be washed away before the next use. No matter what type of kitchen water filtering system you decide on, they all need to be maintained to ensure the longevity of the unit and the quality of the water you get out of it.

A Short History Relating to Quarantines
There is a lot of talk these days concerning the government placing quarantines on its citizens in the event of a major pandemic. The concept behind the quarantines is not a new idea, but rather it has been around for hundreds of years. Our federal authorities have not been the initial creator of quarantines although they have used them in the past and will likely use them in the future as well.
Biblical quarantines have been mentioned in the bible where a seven day period of isolation was mandatory for priests when an infection is imminent. The literal translation of the word quarantine means a 40 day period. Many of the early Mediterranean coastal cities that grow up along the various shipping routes would impose quarantines during the time of 15th century black plague.
Here in America the first actual quarantine occurred in 1796, when legislation was established to permit the federal government to intervene and assist the various states during those periods of the yellow fever epidemics. During the dreaded 1918 influenza epidemic the states that were involved established specific quarantines and even went as far as to impose some mandatory mask laws. The District of Columbia even made it mandatory for the citizens of their district to be restricted to their homes. San Francisco’s authorities on the other hand prominently displayed an assortment of signs and posters everywhere with the slogan “Wear a Mask and You Could Save Your Life”. Masks at the time were shown to be 99 percent effective against the influenza. At one point during the epidemic the health authorities decided to quarantine the complete campus at New York’s Syracuse University for a period of 2
Understanding the Candida Albacans Allergy Connection
What is the correlation between someone’s allergies and the change of getting a candida infection? Or in other words, is there a candida albacans allergy connection? And if so, what can be done about it.
Candida is a common form of yeast that populates the gut, and the most common form of candida is candida albacans. Candida albacans has two different forms, the relatively benign yeast form, and the more insidious fungal form.
The friendly bacteria in the gut normally keeps candida albacans in check and reduce the risk of it multiplying and sticking to the walls of the intestines. This also keeps them from evolving into their fungal form, which is the form that causes the candida symptoms in the body.
The fungal form of candia albicans has tentacles that it uses to pierce the wall of the gut, which can cause what is known as Leaky Gut Syndrome or infections. In this form is also releases spores, which can get into the blood stream and spread to other organs of the body.
If a person is allergic to a certain food, then they often suffer from bloating, swelling, gas, stomach pains, diarrhea or constipation and one or multiple skin complaints and rashes. In fact the symptoms can sometimes be quite similar to those of a candida overgrowth initially.
An allergic reaction can allow a number of opportunities for the candida albacans to overgrow. Normally, the good bacteria in the gut will keep the candida in check, but if there is an allergic reaction the friendly bacteria may not work as effectively. Allergies can also cause an imbalance in the gut flora, which may give the candida the chance its been waiting for to multiply.
Also, when you have an allergic reaction, the immune system works harder to remove the toxins from the body. This may therefore allow the candida infection to spread as the immune system is spread too thin and can’t tackle everything.
If the foods that you have a reaction to are eaten infrequently it is unlikely to effect the levels of candida in the body, except if you have an acute reaction to the food.
However, if the foods that you are allergic to form a common part of your diet, then you may be adding additional unnecessary stress to your digestive and immune system, giving the candida an opportunity to grow.
Interestingly, sometimes a person does not know if they are allergic to a specific food or food group. And this is where a few strategies may help.
Most commonly, the food groups that people are allergic to are Yeast and diary products, so these would be a good place to start.
Grab yourself a diary and keep track of the foods you eat over the coming days and next time you eat something that contains either of these food groups be aware how you body feels. Is there any bloating or gas or stomach pain or any other symptom out of the ordinary?
Then do the same with meals that do not contain any of these food groups and make the same observation.
This exercise can be carried out with all food groups, and you will over time recognize which foods are the ones that cause adverse reaction and you can eliminate these from your diet.
Another way to find out if your are allergic to a particular food or food group is to visit a nutritionist. They can conduct an allergy test, which will very quickly identify any foods that you are allergic too.
Another tactic that has been used successfully is to start on an anti-candida diet. This diet will eliminate, or restrict a number of food groups that are generally the ones that cause an allergic reaction.
The beauty of this approach is that you are combating the allergy as well as the candida infection.

Unfortunately, if you continue to eat foods that cause an allergic you may end up suffering reoccurring yeast infections. So, understanding the Candida Albacans allergy link and changing your diet accordingly is a step that can allow you to take back control of your health.
Avoiding Infections From the Gym
The gym is supposed to be a helpful place where you can go make yourself healthier. However, due to the warm and moist environment of a gym, microscopic pathogens such as bacteria and fungi can flourish. Therefore, you may want to consider wiping down equipment not only to clean off other people’s sweat, but also to wipe away any harmful germs left behind.
First, you have probably heard of the importance of wearing shower shoes in the gym’s bathroom and shower facilities. This is because the fungus that causes athlete’s foot loves the dank atmosphere in the bathroom. However, these are not the only microorganisms that can attack you. Ringworm and jock itch are contagious fungi that are often present in the gym.
Because exercise specialists only tell people to avoid the gym if they have a high fever, people can come to workout while infected with other viruses such as stomach flu and colds. If someone wipes their nose with their hand then touches the equipment, the cold virus can quickly spread to other patrons. Therefore, when you are getting on a workout machine or picking up some weights, you should consider wiping them down with a sanitary towelette or other cleanser.
Lastly, there are also harmful bacteria lurking at the gym. One particularly dangerous microorganism is Staphylococcus. Commonly called staph, this bacteria can invade any open wound on your skin, such as a pimple or scrape. Staph causes a sore that typically contains pus and blood. While staph can often be treated with topical and oral antibiotics, this powerful bacteria can also spread to important areas of your body, making it more dangerous as well as more difficult to treat.
If you want to avoid infections at the gym, you can consider joining a private facility that is only used by a few individuals. This way, you can ensure that you are exposed to fewer pathogens. Additionally, you can get the personal help and attention that you deserve. To help you reach your health goals, contact a Chicago personal trainer from B4 Health and Fitness today.
Cancer Ribbon Cookies As Favors Or Fundraisers
The pink ribbon is the universal sign for breast cancer. But there are many other colors associated with the symbolic ribbon that represent different types of cancers, as well as other illnesses or causes.
If looking to tie an event with one of these causes, a ribbon shaped cookie decorated with the particular color of the disease or cause makes a great favor. To top it off, edible favors are perhaps the most enjoyed and appreciated type of favor, rarely left behind when the celebration or event ends.
You can also use the cookies as fundraisers, raising both awareness and money. Whether you make and decorate the cookies yourself (ribbon shaped cookie cutters are easily found on the internet) or have them made for you, they should sell well. People will feel good when donating as well as they will have a delicious, little ‘thank you’ for doing so.
To fancy up the favor or fundraiser attach a attractive, personalized tag to each individually bagged/wrapped cookie. One especially nice touch is to print out labels with your message, and then with a paper punch larger than the label and using cardstock in a color to match the cookie, cut out the cardstock shapes and put the labels in the middle of the shape.
Some of the most well known ribbons in the States are:
Teal for ovarian cancer Blue for prostate cancer Silver for ovarian cancer Gold for childhood cancers Purple for pancreatic cancer, lupus and fibromyalgia Black for melanoma Gray for brain cancer Periwinkle for stomach cancer Red for Aids Yellow for deployed troops and sarcoma and bone cancers Diva Entertains- Copyright 2009
Help I Am Allergic To Chocolate
If you are allergic to chocolate then you suffer from Allergies Type 1, also called Contact Allergies. Scientists do not clearly understand why the immune system of people allergic to chocolate considers some food proteins as harmful by the body.
The immune system can mount a variety of defenses mechanisms against proteins that is considers as harmful or foreign. Symptoms can be very mild to life-threatening depending on the severity of your chocolate allergies. They usually occur within a few minutes to a few hours after eating or inhaling chocolate.
True allergies to chocolate or cocoa are very rare. Other ingredients, additives or chemicals found in processed chocolate such as nuts, milk, gluten from wheat, soybeans, corn, syrup, caffeine, Theo-bromine, and Phenyl-ethylamine, cause most allergic reactions to chocolate. The higher the quality of chocolate the lower the chances of other additives being found in chocolate.
Cocoa is made from the seeds of the cocoa tree that have been fermented, roasted and then ground up. The cocoa tree originated in Central America but is now grown in tropical climates around the world.
The proteins found in chocolate trigger the immune system to reaction. Antibodies and histamines are releases into the blood stream in an attempt to neutralize the chocolate protein. These chemicals trigger the allergic symptoms. In sever cases Epinephrine, also call Adrenaline, is administered to control the anaphylaxis reaction.
If you are unsure if you are allergic to chocolates then one of the tests you could be given is called Food Challenge Test. Avoid all chocolates for several weeks. The doctor will then give you pure chocolate without any of the other ingredients usually found in processed chocolate. This test needs to be given under close supervision by an allergist. If you are truly allergic to chocolate a violent reactions may occur and emergency medical attention may be needed. If symptoms appear within two hours after the taking the pill then you are allergic to it and will need to avoid it.
Avoidance can be very difficult because cocoa is often hidden in other foods. Read the labels of every food that you bring into your home. Because the manufacturing processes change continuously re-read the labels each time you purchase a product. On January 1, 2006 a new law was passed stating that all labels should be designed in such a way that a 7-year-old child could read and understand the ingredients.
Some of the health benefits of eating chocolate, in moderation of course, are reducing the risk of hart disease, increase longevity, increases libido and increased sexual fulfillment. Antioxidants are also found in chocolate and are believed to lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream. Just because it tastes good does not mean that it is bad for you so enjoy the occasional teat, you deserve it.

Natural Remedies for Arthritis Pain – Find Them in Your Kitchen
For centuries, spices were used as natural remedies for a long list of ailments. As prescription drugs became the norm, spices fell out of the mainstream. But research confirms the spice cabinet can often be as potent as a prescription bottle. Spices are powerful sources of antioxidents, anti-inflammatories, and phyto chemicals, which can relieve the pain, swelling, and discomfort of arthritis. Here are some tried and true kitchen remedies.
Turmeric. Culled from the curcumin plant, turmeric fights inflammation. It helps to stop free radicals in their tracks. It also halts cartlilage destruction, blocks inflammation, and reduces swelling. To use it, eat dishes made with curry several times a week or supplement with 1000 mg turmeric capsules two or three times per day, depending on your symptom severity.
Ginger. Common in traditional Chinese medicines, ginger inhibits inflammation to ease arthritis pain. Ginger is especially well suited for people whose arthritis worsens in cold weather, since it warms painful joints by helping increase blood flow. To use it, drink a cup of ginger tea daily, (add one teaspoon freshly grated ginger to hot water, let steep for 10 to 20 minutes, strain and drink). Or take a ginger supplement, one 500 mg capsule three or four times daily. You can also try ginger essential oil. Dilute three drops with half teaspoon almond oil and rub into affected joints.
Rosemary. A staple in Mediterranean cuisine, this herb contains antioxidants and phytochemicals that reduce inflammation and act as a pain reliever. To use it, add six drops of rosemary essential oil to your bathwater, or mix six drops with half teaspoon almond oil and massage into sore joints. Do not use during pregnancy.
Saffron. This fabled herb is hand-picked from crocus blossoms and is a potent antioxidant, packing a powerful arthritis relieving punch with its woody scent and yellow color. It’s pretty pricey, 1 ounce costs about $45, because it’s so labor-intensive to grow and pick. To use it, mix half a teaspoon saffron into a glass of boiling water and drink as a tea. Don’t overdo it. More than 2 grams per day can cause nausea. You can also mix several drops of saffron essential oil with a half teaspoon of almond oil and rub directly into joints.
Cayenne. Cayenne is what puts the zing in chili and other spicy dishes. It also blocks a substance in the body that transmits pain signals. To use, it is best used topically since it can cause nausea when too much is taken internally. Find a prepared topical cayenne cream at most pharmacies at health food stores and rub in affected areas according to package directions.
Facts About MRSA
Whenever the possibility of a new nasty bug hits the media, hype gets piled on hype and you would think we were all going to die in the next five minutes. MRSA is one such bug that the media has gone nuts on. It is a nasty bug, but let’s try to stick to the facts we know about MRSA instead of the hype. So, just what are the facts? Glad you asked.
Let’s start off with the basics. MRSA is a form of staph infection. “MRSA” stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. That is a mouthful, so you can see why everyone just calls is “MRSA.” Regardless, the two initial words of that title are the important ones.
“Methicillin-resistant” means that this is a form of staph infection that is not cured by methicillin-based antibiotics. Okay, what does all that mumbo jumbo mean? It means that penicillin, amoxicillin and similar drugs do not kill the MRSA bug. Ah, now I have your attention.
MRSA seems like a recent scare, but it is not. Although the media has only taken an interest in the last few years, MRSA has been around for decades. It first appeared in hospitals and nursing homes where it was able to gain traction with patients that had poor immune systems and natural defenses. More recently, it has been making news via incidents with professional players and via appearing in school gyms and locker rooms.
MRSA is a severely misunderstood bug. A huge number of us have the staph bacteria. The microscopic bug can be found on our skin or in our noses. As much as one third of the population may be carrying it. So, why haven’t we had a tragic epidemic? Well, the bug only is dangerous if it enters the body. This is why it is a big threat during surgery and if you get any wounds.
How did MRSA come to be? There is no exact answer and it is a controversial subject. In the view of some, it is a resistant strain that developed as a result of doctors over prescribing antibiotics for just about any and all health problems people had. An opposite view is it is just part of the natural development of things and would have happened regardless of the prescribing tendency of physicians.
What is your best defence against MRSA? The first step you can take is to keep your body in good shape. This leads to a strong immune system, which is the best defence against MRSA. On top of this common sense strategy, you should use sanitizers that kill MRSA like Hand Sanz from All Terrain Company. The more you can limit your exposure to the superbug, the better off you will be.
Condom Latex Allergy
Use condoms for safe sex, this is the buzz we hear every now and then but do we really know whether the condom we use is safe or not. Small amounts of Potent Carcinogen (a cancerous substance) are released whenever condoms are used. We have little or no idea if this may be serious moreover; it is not a healthy practice to expose the reproductive organs to such cancer causing substances regularly. Itching sensation in the organs, skin infection, blotches, pain in the genital (due to dryness of condom) is some of the frequent complaint people have during its usage. There are quite a large numbers of people who are allergic to condom latex. If you are fortunate enough, the mild allergic reactions can be treated at home while in some cases it may be severe and life-threatening.
Risk factor with condoms
The quality control assurance i.e. the condom is likely to break or leak does not primarily ensure that the condom is free from harmful substances and chemicals. As a matter of fact, no one knows what risks one may face due to prolong use of condoms. It has only been in the last few years, the condom use has increased due to the fear of sexually transmitted diseases. Talc is a substance used in the manufacture of latex goods which acts as a lubricant as well as release the product from the mold used at the time of manufacturing. However, talc as a lubricating substance is harmful for the body tissues. The regular use of such condom with talc as a lubricating agent blocks the fallopian tube in turn. Although some condom manufacturers still use talc as a dry lubricant, others use dry lubricants such as silicone and cornstarch.
Dermatitis (skin allergy) in both men and women is increasingly growing problem due to use of latex condom. Nonetheless, in case of men dermatitis is rather easy to detect and diagnose but somehow in women the treatment can be more difficult. Some of the side effects of latex condoms in women are increased vaginal discharge, a burning sensation in the vagina, and itching in the vulva. Also the symptom is not easily detectable by any laboratory investigations.
Other harmful side effects of Condoms
• A few men lose their erection after putting on a condom.
• There is no direct contact between the penis and the vagina.
• The woman may miss the delight of warm fluid entering her body (important to some women, not to others).
• Friction caused due to condom may reduce clitoral stimulation and loss of lubrication during intercourse may lessen the pleasure and makes it uncomfortable.
• Intercourse may be less pleasing since the man must withdraw his penis immediately after ejaculation.
Prevention
Condoms are available in different sizes, variety of textures and are generally supplied with a lubricant coating to facilitate better penetration and also provide better stimulation to the partner. Apart from harmful latex there are other material used to make condom like natural rubber, polyurethane, and lambskin. Polyurethane condoms are odorless and are preferred by those who are allergic to latex and those who have a special inclination for oral sex. There are a few non rubber and non latex condoms available in the market.
Non rubber condoms such as Fourex Natural Lamb Skins (Schmidt, Sarasota, Florida) and Trojan Natural Lamb Skins are made of processed sheep intestine (caecum) are considered safe. However, they may contain a few lubricants that include perfume, preservative (Bronopol) and propylene glycol, which may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. These non rubber condoms can prevent transmission of sperm, but the FDA has ruled that they may be ineffective in preventing transmission of HIV.
It is usually advisable to consult a medical expert or a doctor before using any of the contraceptive methods available in the market.
Thumb Arthritis: This Joint Pain Is More Common Than You Think
This condition can cause many problems for sufferers, including loss of grip and, of course, a great deal of pain. But what are its causes and is there a remedy?
Thumb arthritis usually occurs after the age of forty and is more common in women than in men. The first symptom of thumb arthritis is usually pain experienced at the base of the thumb when gripping an object or when applying force – say to turn a key or open the lid of a jar. This form of osteoarthritis can make these simple household tasks difficult as it limits the strength and range of motion of the thumb.
Other symptoms may include swelling, stiffness and tenderness at the base of the thumb, decreased strength when grasping objects, enlarged appearance or a ‘bony’ look to the base of the thumb and general discomfort and aching after use.
The exact cause of this condition is unknown (in common with osteoarthritis generally) but the following factors are thought to contribute to its development:
Being female
Having a job that puts high stress on the thumb joint
Having certain hereditary conditions – joint ligament laxity, defective cartilage etc.
Having past injuries such as fractures or sprains to the basal thumb joint
Being over forty years of age
Having existing rheumatoid arthritis
The basal thumb joint allows your thumb its wide range of movement and consists of the trapezium (the small bone at the base of your thumb), the first metacarpal (the thumb’s first bone) and the wrist’s scaphotrapezio-trapezoidal joint (STT).
In a normal basal joint, cartilage covers the ends of the bone, acting as a cushion to let the bones glide smoothly over each other. In thumb arthritis, the cartilage deteriorates allowing the bone ends to rub and roughen – the main cause of pain.
Your body’s attempts to repair the damage may lead to new bone growth (spurs), which are noticeable on the joint. Each of the repair steps also produces the pain commonly associated with this condition.
Although there is no cure for thumb arthritis, self-care measures do exist. These include specialised splints, prescribed medication or corticosteroid injections. In extreme cases surgery may be the only way to gain a measure of relief.
It would seem then that there is no real remedy for thumb arthritis, any more than other general arthritic conditions, but that early diagnosis and treatment may serve to alleviate the worst symptoms of what can otherwise be a very debilitating condition. Changing lifestyle or work practices may help – any reduction of strain on the affected joint should bring some measure of relief. Too, adapting to the condition by using aids to mobility or dexterity can help, alleviating some of the frustration that is often felt by sufferers of arthritis and allowing the person affected to retain as much independence as possible. Exercise (as opposed to stressing) of the joint can also help to retain its range of motion.
As with all medical issues, it is essential that you consult your doctor if you suspect the onset of any form of arthritis.
